Tamara Pavlovic
INNER CHILD FANTASIES
Born in Belgrade, Serbia, Tamara Pavlovic is multidisciplinary artist now based in Sydney, whose practice explores female identity and the female form. The artist employs a wide range of media including painting, mixed media and recently video performance. The hybrid and morphed figures that occupy Pavlovic’s works reflect her interest in surrealism and psychology, hinting at the inner workings of the female psyche, memories and the unconscious. With deconstruction and reconstruction of bodies in playful and provocative ways, Pavlovic creates narrative with mixed media works that dominates her practice in the last couple of years. In these intimate portraits, Tamara captures figures that are moody and are placed in dreamlike spaces.
This inner child world that Pavlovic creates, is something in between fantasy and reality. Applying watercolours, ink and collage techniques on paper that are fluid and nonlinear in application, Tamara developed a way to let go of control and let imagination take place and that became a therapeutic and cathartic practice. Thisprocess usually unconscious, intuitive and loose to start with but at the same time constructed with careful consideration about composition, colour, lines and textures that evoke emotional response.
Graduating with Master of Art at UNSW Art & Design in 2019, Tamara won Blue Works on Paper Prize 2020 at Blackstone Gallery and has been finalist in many art awards such as Fisher’s Ghost, Blacktown Art Prize, Hunter’s Hill Art Award and Lethbridge 20000 small scale award, to name a few.
